DescriptionEthalfluralin belongs to the class of organic compounds known as dinitroanilines. These are organic compounds containing an aniline moiety, which is substituted at 2 positions by a nitro group. The greatest amounts of ethalfluralin are used in growing soybeans, dry beans, and sunflower seeds. Ethalfluralin is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). Ethalfluralin is a potentially toxic compound. Ethalfluralin causes moderate eye irritation and moderate to severe skin irritation, and has been placed in Toxicity Category II. Ethalfluralin otherwise is of relatively low acute toxicity. It also is a skin sensitizer. Ethalfluralin may be used in growing a variety of grain, seed, and cucurbit crops. Ethalfluralin is a selective herbicide used for the preemergence control of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds in certain food and feed crops. Some mutagenicity studies have shown that ethalfluralin was weakly mutagenic. It is marketed under the trade name Sonalan. This compound has been identified in human blood as reported by (PMID: 31557052 ). Ethalfluralin is not a naturally occurring metabolite and is only found in those individuals exposed to this compound or its derivatives. Technically Ethalfluralin is part of the human exposome. The exposome can be defined as the collection of all the exposures of an individual in a lifetime and how those exposures relate to health. An individual's exposure begins before birth and includes insults from environmental and occupational sources.
