Participants have no cardiovascular disease at baseline and fulfill at least one of the two following criteria: presence of type 2 diabetes mellitus or three or more major cardiovascular risk factors: tobacco smoking, hypertension, LDL cholesterol ≥ 160 mg/dL, HDL cholesterol ≤ 35 mg/dL, overweight or obesity (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2), and/or family history of premature coronary heart disease
